H1N1 - Local surveillance measures
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has raised its Pandemic Threat Alert Phase to Level 6. If you are concerned about the outbreak of swine flu, please read the information provided by the FCO. In particular, the section headed “British nationals overseas”.
The Government of Bangladesh has introduced surveillance measures at Zia International Airport. On arrival travellers from affected countries (including the UK) should be prepared to fill out a questionnaire to be handed to medical staff.
Travellers suspected of having H1N1 would be admitted to designated government hospitals for compulsory testing and treatment.
The British High Commission will not be able to offer diagnosis or medical treatment. You should assure yourself of your own healthcare arrangements and consult your healthcare provider before travelling to Bangladesh. It would also be sensible for you to consider whether you have access to anti-viral drugs and appropriate medical facilities should you be infected.
We have been informed that the anti-viral drug oseltamivir (e.g. Tamiflu) can be bought locally in Bangladesh. Those proposing to purchase the drug locally should also be aware that counterfeit drugs might be in circulation. Oseltamivir should not be taken unless recommended by a health care professional.
British nationals working in Bangladesh should speak to their employers about the contingency plans they have in place for a flu pandemic. Such plans may include access to antiviral treatment for employees and/or repatriation to the UK. You should note that the British High Commission would be unable to offer repatriation.
Please continue to monitor the WHO website and look at guidance on Pandemic Flu which can be obtained on the UK Department of Health website.
